EPISODE SYNOPSIS
Kelechi Okafor Joins Season 3 of Texture Talks, Sponsored by Garnier’s Method for Curls.
In this episode, we’re joined by the brilliant actress, director, and cultural commentator @kelechnekoff — Kelechi Okafor — for an honest and emotional discussion about our hair journeys, identity, and the politics that are woven through every strand.
Together, we dive deep into:
-
Our childhood hair memories, including the experience of having our hair relaxed at a young age
-
The ways society polices Afro hair textures — often dictating which textures are deemed "acceptable" or "desirable"
-
Why natural Afro hair is still perceived as "unprofessional" in many spaces today
-
The importance of reclaiming and celebrating our roots, not just aesthetically but politically
-
Healing from early hair shame and internalized bias, and finding pride in the textures we were taught to hide
This episode is a reminder that our hair is so much more than just hair. It's history, it's resistance, and it's beauty.
Whether you’re on your own journey of embracing your natural texture or seeking to better understand the cultural significance behind it, this conversation is for you.
